Book Review: Answering Jihad: A Better Way Forward

Nabeel Qureshi is a former Muslim. He is also one of the bright writers. He was raised by devout Muslim parents in U.S. He became a follower of Christ through dreams, visions, and rigorous research. Nabeel is the author of the New York Times bestselling Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus (Recommended book). He is also a speaker with Ravi Zacharias International Ministeries.

Nabeel’s new book, Answering Jihad, presents an insightful answers to the questions concerning Jihad. Many of us are confused and perplexed about Islam. We don’t know how to think about Islam. Some say Islam is a peaceful religion and has nothing to do with Jihad. While, others insist that Islam is not peaceful. Nabeel offers a balanced yet accurate account of Islamic Jihad. He addresses 18 confusing and perplexing questions. In his conclusion, he suggests a better way forward.

This book is divided into three parts and each section seeks to address six questions.

Part 1: The Origins of Jihad

The first part of this book aims to inform and educate the readers about the beginning of Jihad. Nabeel provides us answers to the thorny questions: What is Islam? Is Islam “a Religion of Peace”? What is Jihad?  Is Jihad in the Quran and the Life of Muhammad? What is Sharia? Was Islam Spread by the Sword?

Part 2: Jihad Today

The second part of this book focuses on the present context of Jihad. This section of the book deals with the current questions: What is Radical Islam? Does Islam Need a Reformation? Who Are Al-Qaida, ISIS, and Boko Haram? Who Are the True Muslims–Violent or Peaceful Muslims? Why Are Muslims Being Radicalized? Are Muslims Trying to Take Over the West with Sharia?

Part 3: Jihad In Judeo-Christian Context

Finally, the third part of the book deals exclusively to the Jihad in the context of Judeo-Christians. For those of us who are Christians, this part is absolutely necessary and must read. Nabeel addresses six questions in this section. Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? Why Do Some Christians Call God “Allah”? How Does Jihad Compare with Old Testament Warfare? What Does Jesus Teach about Violence? How Does Jihad Compare with the Crusades? What Does Jesus Have to do with Jihad?

Snippet:

From p.142,

Violence has a very different place in Islam and Christianity’s theological framework. The final marching orders of Islam is jihad. The final marching orders of Christians are grace and love.

Conclusion

As a former Muslim, I enjoyed reading this book. Before my conversion, I had to look into these questions, and there were not many books available that dealt with the topic of Jihad as clearly. Answering Jihad is a very insightful book and quite short (for those of us who don’t like reading). It is an excellent resource to have especially for those of us who share the gospel with our Muslim neighbors.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.
